Absorption, Blocking and Diffusion

The three things you can do to sound in a room — stop it passing between rooms, soak it up inside, or scatter it evenly. Knowing which you need is the difference between a fix and wasted foam.

There are only three fundamental things you can do about sound in a building — block it, absorb it, or diffuse it. Every product and every service is one of these three, or a combination. The reason so much money is wasted on acoustics is that people reach for the wrong one: they buy absorption when they needed blocking, and are baffled when the neighbours can still hear everything. This guide gives you the three tools clearly, with a kitchen analogy that makes them stick.

Picture a Pot on the Stove

Imagine a pot of soup coming to the boil.

  • Blocking is the lid — it keeps what’s inside from escaping and what’s outside from getting in.
  • Absorption is a sponge in the soup — it soaks up energy so the liquid doesn’t slosh and build up.
  • Diffusion is stirring — it keeps things evenly spread so nothing pools in one hot spot.

You need different tools for different jobs, and a sponge is not a lid. That single image resolves most soundproofing confusion.

Blocking — Stopping Sound Between Rooms

Blocking is soundproofing in the strict sense: stopping sound passing between spaces — out of your studio, into your bedroom, away from your neighbours. It is achieved with mass (heavy, dense layers), decoupling (breaking the physical path so vibration can’t cross), damping (killing panel resonance) and above all sealing (a 1% gap can cost around 10 dB). Blocking is what stops the generator waking the house and keeps a consultation private. It is measured by STC for airborne and IIC for impact. This is the engineering behind wall soundproofing, soundproof doors and seals and acoustic windows. Crucially, foam does none of this — a sponge on the wall never sealed the lid.

Absorption — Soaking Up Sound Inside a Room

Absorption works inside a single room. Soft, porous materials — mineral wool panels, PET felt, thick fabric, carpet — convert sound energy into a tiny amount of heat as the wave passes through them, so it doesn’t bounce back as echo. Absorption makes a room sound calmer and clearer: it kills the harsh reverberation of a tiled restaurant, tames the din of an open-plan office, and cleans up a room for video calls or recording. It does not stop your neighbour hearing you — that energy is still in your room until absorbed, not blocked from leaving.

Absorption is rated by NRC (Noise Reduction Coefficient), a score from 0 to 1 measuring how “thirsty” a surface is for sound — carpet drinks it, glossy tile spits it back. Diffusion — Scattering Reflections Evenly

Diffusion is the subtlest of the three and the least understood. Rather than soaking sound up, a diffuser scatters it — breaking a single strong reflection into many weaker ones spread in all directions. The point is that a room can be made too dead by absorption alone: strip out every reflection and a space sounds unnatural and lifeless, and speech loses its liveliness. Diffusion keeps a room sounding natural and even, with no harsh echoes and no dead corners — it is the “stirring” that stops sound pooling in one spot. It matters most in music studios, listening rooms, worship spaces and lecture halls, where you want clarity and a natural acoustic. Diffusers are shaped surfaces — think sculpted panels of varying depth — and they work alongside absorption, never instead of it.

Why You Usually Need More Than One

Real rooms rarely need only one of the three. A home cinema needs blocking so it doesn’t disturb the house, absorption so dialogue is clear, and a little diffusion so it doesn’t sound like a padded box. The Honest Summary

None of these three delivers “total silence,” and no one should promise it. Blocking reduces transmission to a measured target; absorption reduces echo to a target reverberation time; diffusion evens out what remains. The skill — and the value of a survey — is diagnosing which of the three your space actually needs, in what proportion, and with which climate-appropriate materials for humid Ghana. Buy the lid when you need the lid, the sponge when you need the sponge.
